Broken Glass

Arthur Miller · 1994 CE · Play · Modern / American · Contemporary

Brooklyn, November 1938: Sylvia Gellburg loses the use of her legs with nothing physically wrong, in the weeks she has spent reading the reports out of Germany and looking at photographs of old men made to scrub pavements with toothbrushes. Her husband, the only Jew at a Manhattan mortgage house and proud of the distinction, calls in a doctor who takes a warm interest in the wife and asks the husband questions he will not answer. Miller's last major play sets a private paralysis against a public one.
