Three Lives

Gertrude Stein · 1909 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Three working women in the town of Bridgepoint are followed through the routines that use them up: a German servant who governs the households she keeps, a restless young Black woman who wants to know everything, and a placid immigrant girl married off by her aunt. The sentences circle and repeat, catching thought as it actually loops rather than as narration usually reports it. Written while Stein was sitting for Picasso, it is the first sustained attempt to do in English prose what post-impressionist painting had done to the figure.
