A View from the Bridge
Eddie Carbone unloads ships in Red Hook and has raised his wife's orphaned niece as his own, and when two of her cousins come off a boat without papers he takes them into the apartment. The younger one sings, cooks, bleaches his hair and makes the girl laugh, and Eddie begins producing reasons why she cannot have him, none of them the reason. A neighbourhood lawyer who could not stop any of it narrates from a desk on the street, in a district with one law that is never broken.
