Thérèse Raquin

Émile Zola · 1867 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

Married off to the sickly cousin she was raised beside, Thérèse keeps her aunt's haberdashery in a damp Paris arcade and sits out the same game of dominoes with the same four guests every Thursday. Camille brings home a broad-shouldered colleague who paints a little, and the back room of the shop stops being a place where nothing happens. Zola answered the reviewers who called it putrid with a preface claiming he had merely dissected two human animals.
