The Earth

Émile Zola · 1887 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

An old Beauce farmer past working divides his fields between two sons and a daughter in return for a pension and a room, the whole arrangement drawn up while the testator is still at the table. The pension is paid late, then disputed, then not paid, and the wheat goes on being cut around a household working out what an old man is worth. Zola's harshest book, and the one five of his own disciples denounced in the press for degrading the peasant past recognition.
