The Masterpiece

Émile Zola · 1886 CE · Novel · French · Victorian

A painter with a studio above the Seine is hung in the Salon des Refusés and laughed at, marries the country girl who once ended up in his bed by accident, and begins a canvas of Paris too large to reach without a ladder. Every year the picture is scraped down and started again while the friends who compromised earlier collect their prizes. Zola wrote his own boyhood with Cézanne into it, and the friendship did not survive publication.
