Martin Eden

Jack London · 1909 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

A sailor with a broken education is taken into a comfortable Oakland household after a street brawl, falls for the daughter of the house, and decides to make himself a writer worthy of her. Years of borrowed grammars, pawn tickets and returned manuscripts follow, and then all at once the editors change their minds about work they had already refused. London meant it as an indictment of individualism and found that readers kept taking it for a success story.
