The Iron Heel

Jack London · 1908 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

A manuscript written by Avis Everhard and recovered seven centuries later describes how an American oligarchy of trusts crushed the labour movement and installed itself for three hundred years. Her husband Ernest, a working-class socialist who out-argues the professors and clergy at their own dinner tables, moves from lecture halls to a fighting underground as the plutocracy buys the unions it cannot break. Footnotes by the far-future editor keep interrupting to explain a civilisation the narrator is still living inside.
