In Dubious Battle

John Steinbeck · 1936 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

Jim Nolan signs on with the Party and is sent with an organiser named Mac into a California apple valley where the pickers find their wages cut the day they arrive. Out of a broken hip, a borrowed field and a dead man worth more to the cause than he ever was alive, the two of them assemble a strike. Steinbeck had watched the 1933 cotton strike and wrote it without taking either side's account on trust.
