Tortilla Flat
Danny comes back from the war to find he has inherited two houses in the paisano quarter above Monterey, and by taking his friends in he acquires responsibilities none of them is fitted for. Each chapter is a self-contained exploit — a stolen sausage, a vacuum cleaner with no motor in it, treasure dug up on St Andrew's Eve — set down in mock-heroic register. Steinbeck's first commercial success, and the book he regretted seeing read as charm.
