Uncle Tom's Children

Richard Wright · 1938 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist

Four novellas of the Jim Crow South: boys caught swimming on white land, a man steering a commandeered boat through a Mississippi flood, a farm wife visited by a travelling salesman, a preacher squeezed between a relief committee and the sheriff. Each opens in ordinary work or play and turns, within hours, on the machinery of lynch law. Wright's first book, and the one he judged too consoling.
