Rabbit Redux

John Updike · 1971 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Ten years on, Harry Angstrom sets type at a Brewer print shop, watches the Apollo 11 launch on a bar television and comes home to find his wife has moved in with a Greek car salesman. Into the emptied house come a runaway rich girl and a black Vietnam veteran with a taste for lecturing white America on its history. Updike used the second Rabbit book to force 1969 — moon, war, drugs, riots — inside a single working-class living room.
