The Witches of Eastwick

John Updike · 1984 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Three divorced women in a Rhode Island town in the late 1960s have found that leaving their husbands gave them powers — over the weather, over other people's health, over anyone they decide to resent. A rich, unwashed, wonderfully rude stranger buys the old Lenox place, installs a tennis court and a hot tub, and gathers all three around him. Updike's answer to the charge that he could not write women was itself charged with misogyny.
