Couples

John Updike · 1968 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Ten young married couples in a Massachusetts coastal town have made each other's beds the only sacrament left to them, arranging parties, weekend games and adulteries with the seriousness their parents gave to church. A builder with a Congregationalist conscience and a taste for other men's wives sits at the centre of the round. Time put Updike on its cover in 1968 under the headline The Adulterous Society, and the book made him rich.
