Uncle Tom's Cabin

Harriet Beecher Stowe · 1852 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

A Kentucky planter in debt sells two of the people he owns: a young mother who runs north with her child over the breaking ice of the Ohio, and a settled middle-aged man of deep Christian faith who is carried the other way, down the river into the Deep South. The two routes alternate, and the second passes through owners of worsening character. Written in fury at the Fugitive Slave Act, it outsold every American book of its century.
