The Jungle
Jurgis Rudkus arrives in Chicago's Packingtown from Lithuania strong enough to believe that work will be enough, buys a house on terms nobody in the family can read, and takes a job on the killing beds. Injury, winter, a foreman's hold over his wife and the fine print of the mortgage strip the household one member at a time. Sinclair meant the book as socialist argument and got the Pure Food and Drug Act instead, the packing-house chapters overwhelming everything he cared about more.
