Saint Joan of the Stockyards
Chicago's packing yards shut when the price of livestock collapses, and a young woman of the Black Straw Hats goes down among the laid-off men with soup and a drum. Deciding the cause of their misery must sit higher than the foremen, she carries the question up to the meat king himself, who finds a use for her. Brecht set German classical blank verse against stockyard economics; it went out on radio in 1932 and reached a stage only after his death.
