Fear and Misery of the Third Reich

Bertolt Brecht · 1938 CE · Play · German · Modernist

A judge tries to find out from his clerk which way he is expected to decide a case between a Jewish shopkeeper and a stormtrooper. A wife packs a suitcase in Frankfurt and rehearses the telephone call she will make to her husband; two boys in a camp compete over who is the more loyal. Twenty-four scenes cross Germany between the seizure of power and the Anschluss, built in exile from press reports and refugee testimony, and staged almost unstylised.
