Ofeyi runs promotion for the national Cocoa Corporation and begins using its campaigns to seed the ideas of Aiyero, a communal village on the coast that has kept itself outside the Cartel's reach. Reprisal arrives as organised massacre, Iriyise is taken, and Ofeyi goes down through the country's slaughterhouses toward the prison that holds her. Soyinka's answer in fiction to the Biafran war, laid over the descent of Orpheus.
