The Lion and the Jewel
A stranger's photographs of Ilujinle reach the village in a glossy magazine, and Sidi, already the local beauty, learns exactly what she is worth. Two men press their claims: Lakunle, the mission-schooled teacher who lectures against bride price and cannot pay it, and Baroka, the ageing Bale with a full harem and a wounded pride. Soyinka's early comedy sets Yoruba dance, drumming and mime against an imported idea of progress.
