The Trials of Brother Jero

Wole Soyinka · 1960 CE · Play · Nigerian · Contemporary

Jeroboam works a strip of Lagos beach as a self-appointed prophet, holding off the trader who sold him the plot, keeping his most useful convert from ever winning the promotion he prays for, and confiding the whole operation to the audience. Women are his declared weakness and his ruin is always one glance away. Soyinka's sharpest short comedy, and the start of a Nigerian satire of the storefront church.
