Mandela's Earth

Wole Soyinka · 1988 CE · Poem · Nigerian · Contemporary

The title sequence speaks directly to a man deep in his years on Robben Island, refusing him the consolations of martyrdom and asking instead what such patience costs the one who holds it. Other poems take on the diplomats who counsel engagement, the poets who make grief decorative, and a Nigeria whose own rulers sit uneasily in the same frame. Published two years after the Nobel, while apartheid still looked permanent.
