To Build a Fire
Jack London · 1908 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Modernist
A newcomer to the Yukon sets out alone for a camp on the left fork at seventy-five below, against the advice of an old-timer, with a husky trotting behind him. He is quick with facts and slow with their significance: he knows the temperature and does not know what it means. The dog, which carries no thermometer and no imagination, knows better.
