The Sea-Wolf

Jack London · 1904 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Modernist

A gentleman critic goes into San Francisco Bay when the ferry is rammed in fog and is fished out by a sealing schooner whose captain refuses to put him ashore. Wolf Larsen reads Spencer and Browning between beatings, holds that life is a yeast and nothing more, and sets his new cabin boy to prove otherwise or die of the attempt. London built the captain as an attack on the Nietzschean superman and was irritated that readers took him for a hero.
