My Brilliant Friend
An old woman learns that the friend of her whole life has cut herself out of every photograph and walked out of Naples, and sits down to write the record that friend most wanted destroyed. What she sets down begins in a poor neighborhood in the 1950s with two clever girls, a shoemaker's workshop, and a decision about which of them will be allowed to stay at school. First of the four Neapolitan novels, it came first in the New York Times poll of the best books of the century's opening quarter.
