Tonio Kröger
Thomas Mann · 1903 CE · Short Story · German · Modernist
A north German boy loves a blond schoolfellow, then a blond girl who cannot dance with him, and grows up into a writer admired in Munich and at home nowhere. Years later he travels north again, is briefly taken for a wanted man in his own town, and watches the same untroubled sort of people dance at a Danish seaside hotel. The artist as a burgher who failed at it, the split Mann spent his whole life restating.
