A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

James Joyce · 1916 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Stephen Dedalus is followed from a small boy's confused sense-impressions at a Jesuit boarding school, through adolescence in a family sliding into poverty, a terrifying retreat sermon on hell, and the discovery that he can write. The prose grows up alongside him, from nursery rhythm to undergraduate argument. Joyce took his hero's name and his epigraph from Ovid's Daedalus, and the closing pages give way to a diary.
