Dust Tracks on a Road

Zora Neale Hurston · 1942 CE · Narrative Non-fiction · Modern / American · Modernist

A girl in Eatonville, the first all-Black incorporated town in Florida, sits on the gatepost hailing rides from white travelers going by, loses her mother early, and is passed between relatives and boarding schools before talking her way into Howard, Barnard and Franz Boas's anthropology. The account runs from that gatepost out through the folklore expeditions and the friendships, quarrels and patrons of the Harlem Renaissance. Her publisher cut the chapters on race and American foreign policy before it appeared, and readers have argued over what remains ever since.
