Jonah's Gourd Vine
John Pearson crosses the creek out of Alabama sharecropping into wage work on the other side, marries Lucy Potts against her mother's will, and finds that the voice which makes him a great preacher is the same appetite that keeps ruining him. The congregations of Eatonville and Sanford give him a pulpit; the women of both towns give him a record. Hurston's first novel, built on her own parents and written in the folk speech her anthropology had just spent five years collecting.
