The Book of Jonah
Hebrew scripture · c. 450 BCE · Scripture · Judeo-Christian · Ancient
Told to go and preach against Nineveh, the prophet takes ship in the opposite direction; the storm that follows puts him overboard and into the belly of a great fish. Delivered to the city at last, he preaches forty days of warning, and the whole of it repents from the king down to the cattle. Four short chapters on the scandal of mercy extended to the enemy.
