Patience
A prophet ordered to preach against a great city takes ship in the opposite direction, and the storm that follows leaves the crew drawing lots to find out whose god they have offended. What the man learns inside the fish turns out not to be what he learns afterwards, sitting outside the walls in the heat under a woodbine. The Jonah story is framed as an argument that patience and poverty are the virtues of people given no choice about either.
