The Winners

Julio Cortázar · 1960 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A state lottery awards a free ocean cruise, and the winners — a schoolteacher, a dentist, a bookish adolescent, a chauffeur, assorted families — are gathered at a café on the Plaza de Mayo and put aboard a ship without being told where it is bound. The stern is sealed, the officers cite typhus below decks, and the passengers divide over whether to believe them. Cortázar's first published novel.
