Three girls escape the washing-up each afternoon to a strip of ground by the railway embankment, where they play at statues and attitudes, one posing in cheap jewellery and a green shawl as the train goes past at ten past two. A boy at a window begins dropping notes addressed to the girl in the ornaments, who is the one who cannot walk. Cortázar on the moment a game stops being playable.
