Cronopios and Famas

Julio Cortázar · 1962 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

Four sets of very short pieces: deadpan instructions for crying, for singing, for climbing a staircase and for winding a watch; the unusual occupations of a family who hold wakes for strangers; and a taxonomy of three species — disorderly cronopios, punctual famas who take out insurance, torpid esperanzas who wait. None of it is story; the units are definitions, procedures and small catastrophes of etiquette.
