Julio Cortázar · 1951 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

A city girl spends the summer at the Funes family's country house, where the chief daily business is establishing which room the tiger is in before anyone moves. The adults arrange themselves around it like plumbing — a sullen brother, his gentle sister-in-law Rema, a small boy who torments everyone — and the girl watches what nobody will say aloud. The title story of Cortázar's first collection.
