The Night Face Up

Julio Cortázar · 1956 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

A man on a new motorcycle swerves from a woman stepping off the kerb, comes round on the pavement with a broken arm, and is set and left in a ward to sleep. Asleep he is a Moteca in a night marsh during the war of the blossom, running from Aztecs who take prisoners alive for the knife, and each waking leaves the swamp harder to shake. The two beds alternate until the reader has to decide which one he is lying in.
