Harry Joy, an advertising man in a comfortable Sydney suburb, dies on his own front lawn for nine minutes and comes back certain that he has been returned to Hell with his family installed as its officers. His agency handles a client whose product is giving people cancer, his wife is sleeping with his partner, his children have arrangements of their own, and the evidence for the diagnosis keeps arriving. It won the Miles Franklin Award.
