The Fat Man in History

Peter Carey · 1974 CE · Short Story · Australian · Contemporary

Twelve stories that open in a recognisable Australia and then follow a single altered premise past the point of return: a boarding house of fat men plotting revolution in a republic where obesity has been declared counter-revolutionary, a soldier guarding an electrified fence in the desert with no idea which side of it he is on, a town remade by the scale model a dead neighbour secretly built of it. The registers of advertising copy and departmental reporting are reproduced exactly while the world they describe comes apart underneath them. Carey's first book, and the one that established the manner.
