We

Yevgeny Zamyatin · 1924 CE · Novel · Russian · Modernist

D-503, chief builder of the spaceship Integral in a state of glass apartments where everyone moves by the Table of Hours and draws pink tickets for the one hour the blinds may come down, begins a journal meant to explain the perfection of the One State to whatever savages the ship reaches. A woman called I-330 gets him drunk, makes him miss work, and takes him out to the ancient house at the edge of the Green Wall, after which the state's doctors tell him he has developed a soul. Finished in 1921 and refused publication at home, it appeared first in English translation; Orwell reviewed it while drafting Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Huxley's denials have never quite dislodged it as the source of the form.
