True History of the Kelly Gang
Ned Kelly, the bushranger of Victoria in the 1870s, writes his own account for the daughter he will never meet, in a racing, unpunctuated Irish-Australian vernacular. The pages move from a poor selector's childhood through police persecution toward the outlawry that made him a national figure. Carey's invented voice, which won the 2001 Booker, gives an Australian legend a prose of its own.
