Axolotl

Julio Cortázar · 1956 CE · Short Story · Latin American · Contemporary

A man who has taken to spending his mornings at the aquarium of the Jardin des Plantes stops in front of the tank of axolotls, small pink Mexican salamanders with translucent human hands and gold eyes that never close. He comes back daily, presses his face to the glass past the guard's patience, and grows certain that behind those eyes there is a thought he can hear. Cortázar's most reprinted short fiction, and the model case of the fantastic opening inside an ordinary Paris morning.
