The Eternal Husband

Fyodor Dostoevsky · 1870 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian

A St Petersburg bachelor in poor health and worse spirits keeps catching sight of a man in a crape hatband about the city, and finally admits to himself who it is: the husband of a woman he spent a summer with in the provinces nine years ago. The widower turns up at his door at two in the morning, drunk and affectionate, with a small daughter in tow and no account of what he has come for. Written in Dresden between two of the big novels, it makes a whole book out of two men who cannot leave off calling on each other.
