The Gambler

Fyodor Dostoevsky · 1866 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian

Tutor to the household of a bankrupt Russian general at a German spa, a young man keeps a journal of the roulette tables while the family waits on a telegram announcing a rich grandmother's death. He plays on behalf of a woman who will not say what she wants from him, and finds that the wheel at least answers. Dostoevsky dictated the whole book in twenty-six days to escape a predatory publishing contract, having lost his own money at Wiesbaden and Baden-Baden.
