The End of the Affair
Maurice Bendrix, a novelist who hates the man he cuckolded almost as much as he hates having been left, meets that husband on Clapham Common in 1946 and offers to have the wife followed. Two years of wartime adultery had stopped without explanation on the afternoon a flying bomb came down on the house, and the private detective brings back a good deal more than the name of a rival. Greene wrote it out of his affair with Catherine Walston, to whom it is dedicated in initials.
