A Burnt-Out Case
A celebrated church architect gets off the riverboat at the last stop, a Belgian leproserie deep in the Congo, and tells the doctor he has come somewhere nothing is expected of him. He is set to drawing building plans, is attached to by a mutilated servant, and finds his arrival noticed first by a devout palm-oil manager and then by the European press. Greene made the journey and kept the notebook published as In Search of a Character, in which he re-read Conrad on the same river.
