Felix Randal

Gerard Manley Hopkins · 1918 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

A parish priest hears that the farrier is dead and works back through the illness — the big-boned man broken down, four disorders contending in one body, the cursing that gave way at last to the anointing. Tending him altered the priest as much as the sacrament altered the smith, and the lines keep returning to the size and strength of a body now spent. Written at Liverpool in 1880, where Hopkins was serving one of the poorest parishes in England and telling his friends he could hardly bear the work.
