The Starlight Night

Gerard Manley Hopkins · 1918 CE · Poem · English · Victorian

Look up, it begins, and it keeps giving the order: fire-folk sitting in the air, circle-citadels, dim woods with diamond delves and elves'-eyes, grey lawns cold where the quickgold lies wind-beat. All of it is for sale and the price is prayer, patience, alms and vows — a barn with the shocks inside it, and behind that wall a household. Written at St Beuno's in Wales in 1877, the year of Hopkins's ordination, and one of the sonnets he posted to Robert Bridges rather than to any editor.
