Tintern Abbey

William Wordsworth · 1798 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

Five summers on from a first visit, the speaker stands above the Wye again with his sister and finds the steep woods, orchard tufts and hedgerows run wild unchanged while he is not — the animal delight of the earlier walk gone, and in its place a sense of something far more deeply interfused. He hands the landscape to her as a kind of insurance, telling her that nature never did betray the heart that loved her, and that these banks will be her memory when he is elsewhere. Composed on the road back to Bristol in July 1798 and printed last in Lyrical Ballads, it is where Romantic autobiography begins.
