Mont Blanc

Percy Bysshe Shelley · 1816 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

The everlasting universe of things flows through the mind as the Arve flows through its ravine, and the speaker watches the river come down from an ice-choked source among pines and precipices where the sound is not all its own. Above it a summit stands remote and inaccessible, holding a power that has no voice and teaches nothing to anyone who cannot already read it. Written in the Vale of Chamouni in July 1816, it answers Coleridge's Hymn Before Sun-Rise by refusing the God that hymn found on the same mountain.
