Julian and Maddalo
Two friends ride out along the sand of the Venetian Lido at sunset arguing about whether the mind forges its own chains, one an English idealist and the other a nobleman of splendid gifts and blackest melancholy. To settle it the count takes his friend across the water next morning to a madhouse on an island and puts him in front of an inmate who was once as hopeful as he is. Shelley drew the count from Byron, whom he had visited in Venice in 1818, and kept the piece out of print because it was too personal.
